TO CUT OR NOT TO CUT?
Stars like Demi Moore are defying the convention that women over 40 should cut their long hair. “Adventure at every age is important, and getting good hair is an easy step,” says Marco Santini, co-owner and stylist at ION Studio in Manhattan. “If you have beautiful and shiny hair as you age, keep it at a length that keeps it looking healthy.” Or if you feel like a change, cut away. “At every age,” he says, “it’s good to have a strong hairstylist to help you take an adventure into transformation that’s appropriate for you.”

Hairstylist Marco Santini of ION Studio creates a rendition of Vidal Sassoon’s asymmetrical bob hairstyle on “The Martha Stewart Show.”

ELLE Magazine | Head Lights: Glossy Hair Secrets

Under a microscope, a strand of hair looks not unlike a snake. Its outer covering, the cuticle, is made up of semicircular keratin “scales”; the smoother these lie, the more lightreflective your whole head will be. Ironically, both heat styling and hair color—yes, the damage duo—can amp up shine.

“Heat from a blow-dryer, curling iron, or straightener is like ironing a shirt,” says Marco Santini, co-owner of NYC’s Ion Studio. “It smooths out all the bumps.” (For the best cuticle smoothing angle, hold the dryer above your head, pointed toward the floor.)

And dye itself is reflective; to make clients such as Kate Beckinsale extra sheeny, colorist Tracey Cunningham follows every dye job with a glaze that keeps color “fresh and shiny for weeks.” To maintain glossiness at home, steal a salon trick: Comb through a hydrating hair mask, then wrap hair in a hot towel (60 seconds in the microwave will do it). Leave the towel on long enough for hair to cool down, allowing the cuticle to close and lock in moisture. Ideally, light penetrates the complexion’s top layers, is diffused laterally, and reflects back out.

Redken Color Extend Shine Enrich maintains luster with cranberry oil; “for a little bit of shine at the very end of the blow-out,” Santini sprays two or three pumps of Davines Defining Gloss into his palm and works it through dry hair.

Since Moroccanoil landed in the UK last year, it has become a firm favourite with salons and celebrities alike. Loved for its hydrating properties as well as its ability to style even the most hard to handle hair, the range has rapidly become a kit bag must-have for red carpet stylists.
Rachel Bilson is the latest celebrity to discover Moroccanoil, after her stylist Marco Santini used the products to create this stunning textured asymmetric look at last month’s Costume Gala in New York.

To get the look, Marco used a combination of Moroccanoil’s best selling products, as he explains…
“It was a very humid night and Rachel’s hair is fine so we had to layer products in a different way to make sure the style not only looked beautiful, shiny and natural but also held up throughout the evening.”
Marco created a low part then finger set the hair with Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, “I used the product to hydrate and smooth her curly texture” he explains, “then I shaped the texture using my hands and the blow dryer.”
Next, Marco sprayed the hair with hair spray and curled with a medium barrel iron. To create the asymmetrical style, he sectioned all the hair on the left of the part then pulled back to give the illusion that Rachel’s hair was shorter on one side.
He then created small braids at the ends and tied the partially braided hair into a ponytail using a thin band. He then released the longer section of hair on the right side so that it would fall over and flow down the neck, hiding the ponytail.
“I wanted to finish with a soft polished look so I added a touch more  Moroccanoil Hydrating Cream and finished with Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray.”

Earth Month Focus: Marco Santini of ION Studio

It’s April, which is Earth Month, and more and more people are looking for eco-friendly alternatives in beauty. New York’s sustainably-designed and wind-powered ION Studio proves that green doesn’t necessarily equate to granola - the space is as chic and modern as it is eco-aware.

Owner and star stylist Marco Santini was gracious enough to answer a few questions on the Studio, going green and of course, HAIR! Read on for the full scoop below.

What was the inspiration for ION?

We wanted to apply the passion and responsibility that we possess for our clients and their appearance and well being, and apply it on a larger scale. We hold the same attention to detail and passion towards the earth as a whole, and the environment as we do towards each individual strand of our client’s hair. The philosophy “there is beauty in everything that we do” drives our studio atmosphere, where the highest level of artistry is applied to cut and color. The philosophy also fuels an extreme passion towards eco-advocacy. We hope to beautify our clients, the earth around us, and help to spread eco-advocacy through the ION studio, our product choice and methods.

Has being “green” always been important to you, personally and/or professionally?

Most definitely. I grew up in Florence, Italy where recycling, sustainability, and living off the earth have been custom to my entire life from childhood to present. Coming to the States and the idea that you can “have more and get rid of more” somewhat threw me for a loop. People were not so much taking care of what they have, but rather consuming more and more and creating more and more waste as a by product. While I believe in the wonderful relationship between product and consumer, and the amazing technology and products we create, we simply need to fine tune our use and methods, and with small, minute changes can make a huge impact on the world around us.

ION carries some amazing hair products.  What are some of your favorite products?

The entire Davines line is great for two reasons: it’s amazing hair care, and extremely eco-friendly. They are constantly working to minimize their carbon footprint and use all natural ingredients wherever possible. Even their packaging is composed of food grade plastic, which a client can wash and reuse. Their work towards eco-advocacy goes on and on, and naturally, the line was a perfect ally for ION’s mission and philosophy. Some stand-out products: Momo Shampoo and Conditioner, Defining Volume Mousse, and Dede Leave in Conditioner.

Is there a can’t miss product or treatment that you’d recommend to anyone?
An in salon only treatment, REST by Davines. It works to put protein and structure back into weakened and damaged hair over a period of about twenty minutes while relaxing at the sink. Comprised of rice protein and wheat protein, it conditions the hair and adds body, while nourishing and polishing. Followed with a rich conditioner and a blow dry, the REST treatment has become extremely popular at ION, and has a near cult like following.

What’s the biggest hair mistake that women make?  Is there an easy fix?
Color, texture, length, body, are all complaints and clients always “want what they can’t have”. Experiment with your natural, baby born texture and color. Work with your stylist to come up with a color plan to bring you back to natural, or a cut that is more flattering for your natural texture. Let your curls go wild! Let pin straight hair lie flat. It would be an interesting experiment on “working with what you have” and will bring health and shine back to over processed coifs. The beauty in our industry is the ability and the technology to transform, but try to go back to who you really are and see what lies underneath!

Special thanks to Marco Santini for the exclusive Q&A above. For more information about ION Studio, visit www.ionstudionyc.com.

Weirdest Hair Tool Ever: A Mattress Needle

0217-jeremy-laing-finished-look_bd-7.jpg

Marco Santini from NYC’s Ion Studio, a hairstylist I often interview for Glamour, did the hair at Jeremy Laing’s fall show and I must say I was surprised at the tools he used to create all the alterna-ponytails! What looked like a row of matching bobby pins in the models’ hair was actually a hair stitch, the handiwork of an antique mattress needle. If Tina Fey’s succinct “Who-wha?” phrase is flashing through your mind, you’re not alone.

0217-jeremy-laing_bd.jpg

“I wanted the stitching to be ambiguous from a distance,” he said. “We used white and black elastic threads. The white ones we colored to match the hair of the model. The needles come from Italy. They are antique mattress needles. They are perfect for weaving hair because of the size, shape and sharpness.” How weird is that!

Despite the strange hair tool it involved, I think the alterna-ponytails looked cute, don’t you? Think your local hair guy has a mattress needle in his kit? Another interesting fact: Marco colored the threads to match each models’ hair with MAC foundation in various shades he borrowed from the MAC makeup team. Sounds like a cool new root fix idea to me!

Celebrity Style Spotting : Pink’s Glamorous Hair Courtesy of Moroccan Oil & Marco Santini!
You can work out your own version of Pink’s amazing look at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards was a shimmering vision of modern glamour.
Stylist Marco Santini, who highlighted glistening shine to play up her platinum hair color, and define her texture and subtle grey tips, created the sophisticated red carpet look.
Santini, inspired by her silver-grey gown and the dramatic performance to come, created a unique, flowing shape that emphasized volume, height, and the illusion of movement. He accented the look with a diamond star-shaped pin.

Santini stayed with Pink after the red carpet, and was backstage waiting to quickly reproduce the look right after her stunning aerial performance of“Glitter in the Air” during which she was drenched in a shower of water.

“I had to work very quickly to restyle her look,” explained Santini. “I used Moroccanoil argan oil-infused products because I know they instantly absorb into hair, produce amazing shine, and won’t create build up. The look had to appear as fresh, light, and beautiful the second time around as it did for the red carpet.”
How Marco Santini Created Pink’s Much Discussed Look:
Step 1: Santini started by applying Moroccanoil Treatment throughout the singer’s damp hair to create a silky-smooth shine. He placed a small amount in the palm of his hand then combed through the hair with his fingers.

Step 2: Next Santini applied argan oil-infused Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream from the roots through the ends for lift at the root and to give soft shine-enhancing hold, as well as create a “grip” for his brush while blow drying shape and direction.

Step 3 After Pink’s cropped locks were blow-dried, Santini misted new argan-oil infused Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray on the outer layer and saturated several layers inside the hair from root to end.

Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray leaves hair looking weightless and gives the hair glistening shine without sticky residue or build-up (especially important in this style since Santini had to reproduce the look after her Grammy performance). Santini then brushed the sides of Pink’s hair back and sculpted a rockabilly fold toward the nape of the neck.
Step 4 He finished the look with a light mist of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray all over the hair (from a distance of 10-12 inches) for an instant boost of shine.

The final touch to Pink’s Grammy look was a star-shaped diamond brooch that was fastened to the front of her hair. Santini took a small section of hair towards the front of her head and tied it with a clear rubber band., then fastened the diamond brooch to the hair for an elegant touch.
Moroccanoil(r) products used to create Pink’s hair look:
Moroccanoil(r) Treatment. a proprietary argan oil-infused formula, is exclusively designed to give hair a natural-looking silky, lustrous shine and a frizz- and static-free finish. It strengthens, conditions and revitalizes hair while significantly reducing drying time. (MSRP:$39.00 / 3.4 fl. oz.)
Moroccanoil(r) Hydrating Styling Cream gives beautifully hydrating and natural-looking hold while eliminating frizz, and adding definition and shine. (MSRP: $30.00 / 10.2 fl. oz.)
Moroccanoil(r) Glimmer Shine Spray creates an instant mist of long-lasting, incomparable shine while protecting hair from the damaging effects of UV light and free radicals. (MSRP: $24.00 / 3.4 fl. oz.)

Best Haircut Ever: Marco Santini at ION Studio

Okay, can we just talk for a second about how horrible a bad haircut can make you feel? Every day you wake up, style your hair and cringe in embarrassment at the terribleness that presents itself before you. You walk out the door and head to work as fast as possible, hoping no one else thinks your hair looks as bad as you do. While at work, you try and keep to yourself, staying in your office or at your cube so no one can spot the offending haircut. All the while, your self-esteem drags down deeper and deeper into the dregs. Pretty awful, right? Well, this is how I’ve felt for the last two months! Luckily, all that has now changed thanks to a FABULOUS new haircut, courtesy of Marco Santini at ION Studio.

When I walked into ION this week (or perhaps creeped in unassumingly so as not to draw unnecessary attention to the horrible haircut I was sporting), I must admit I was a bit worried. It’s always nerve-wracking going to a new stylist, especially when you have something pretty drastic that he needs to fix. But my gal Felicia Sullivan had recommended ION so highly that I knew I just had to take the chance.

So I sat down in Marco’s chair (side note: is he not the best-looking hairstylist ever?) with a bit of trepidation, but hoping for the best. When I told him I wanted a lob (translation: long bob) a la Gwyneth Paltrow or Heidi Klum, and presented pictures to illustrate my case, he immediately agreed and said that would be the perfect style. I breathed a silent sigh of relief and just knew this was going to work out well.

An hour later, blissed out from a deep conditioning treatment with the Davines Su Pak Nourishing Replenishing Mask (the salon uses Davines products, much to my enjoyment and delight), MY HAIR LOOKED FANTASTIC. Marco cut off about 2.5 inches from the back to even up the choppy, blunt layers and turned it into a one-length bob that skims my collarbone. “I am so happy I could cry, laugh or do a jig!” I later told Felicia via Twitter.

And the best news? I’ve finally found an amazing stylist in NYC that I want to go back to time and again! Thank the lord!
